Getting started
In this guide, we explain how to use our library. It covers how to create an account in the online library catalogue, how to reserve a workspace, what special collections there are and what exceptions there are to requesting materials. If after reading this guide, there are any further questions, please contact us using this form.
Explanation of use of certain terms in the text
In the text, you may observe our use of various terms related to the library. The general and official designation for the entire library (the physical space including the books) is the Rijksmuseum Research Library. The Cuypers Library is the name for the actual space in the museum designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers. This is where you can view the books as a registered visitor. We ourselves often use the term Reading Room for this space, which is why you will come across this term most often in the text. The Study Room is officially called Study Room Prints and Drawings and is located right next to the Reading Room. Works from the Print Room, better known as the Rijksprentenkabinet, can be studied there, but also books from the Special Library Collections.
