SAFELY HANDLING DELICATE OBJECTS: Home

HOME

This document is a guide on how to safely handle delicate objects from our collections. Good handling is fundamental to the long-term care and preservation of a work of art. In this guide we discuss our rules and regulations of art handling as it is best that basic principles are adhered too. Our staff are always on site to guide you and to assist. In the following tabs we explain which rules and regulations apply. Navigate between the tabs to read the guidelines regarding the specific types of objects.

On how to make a request to view materials from our collections read the seperate guide Visit the Study Room Prints and drawings

Objects from the following collections can be viewed in the Study Room:

  • The Rijksprentenkabinet (RPK): the collection of Prints, Drawings and Photography from the Rijksmuseum Collection
  • The department of National History
  • The Special Collections of The Research Library
  • The Special Collection of the Royal Antiquarian Society (KOG) on loan to the Rijksmuseum
  • Documentation and archives regarding our collection

These standard guidelines apply to using the Study Room and the Research Library:

  • No coats and bags are to be taken into the rooms. Leave your items at the cloakroom downstairs at the main entrance. You can use the fast lane of the "Friends of the Museum" by showing your reservation to the Study Room.
  • No food and drink (nor any other liquids) are allowed.
  • When taking a break you can leave personal items like a laptop or note pad behind in the Study Room or Research Library. Please notify a member of staff when you will return.
  • Handle objects with clean hands. Wash your hands prior to entering the rooms, again after returning from a break.
  • Please refrain from wearing nailpolish to avoid colour staining. And avoid using hand sanitizers or hand creams as they contain chemicals that can harm our collection.
  • No pens are allowed. Use pencils only. Pencils are provided by our staff.
  • To avoid damage to our collection please think of the following: avoid loose clothing items, take off scarfs and long necklaces, tie your hair together.
  • Use of your own laptop is allowed. There are sockets available for charging.
  • Tablets are available for use in the Study Room. Ask one of our staff members.
  • Switch off your phones and keep voices low in order not to disturb other researchers.
  • Please do not touch the artwork.  If a closer look is necessary or desired, please alert the staff member in the room and that person will do the art handling.
